The Holiday Train

Joyful memories this Christmas as we were able to enjoy another event that we had wanted to go to - he Holiday Train!

We first heard about this train that travels around during the holiday season last year but by the time we heard about it the train was long gone.

This year we strategically planned how we would see it
with three people at work and one in college.

The train would be stopping near our home but that would be too early.
My oldest did see it as he passed the train's stop.

What we decided would work best was to miss a couple closer stops
and head up Saratoga Springs.

The traffic was slow around the train station
but it was totally worth it!

Even stuck in slow-moving traffic we were still on time
considering the train was delayed.

As we were approaching the parking lot
we could hear the horn of the approaching train.

They had a car that opened to a stage
(for my hometown people think the ShowWagon but mechanical).
The band was festive and very good but we weren't there for the band.

We're thinking that maybe next year we might ride the train.

Of course with three of us fascinated with how things work we had to do a closer inspection of the mechanics of the lights on the cars.

Have a Very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!!

The Schenectady Holiday Parade

One thing my family loves it's traditions.

Last year my children and I went to the Monet Experience for my birthday. (I am just now realizing that I never posted about it.)

When we were heading into the Arsenal we saw the parade beginning and joked how the city had scheduled a parade in honour of my birthday.

Of course that meant that we had to come back for the parade this year to actually watch the parade.

We knew it was going to be long because it was still going when we left the Arsenal so we planned on bundling up.

We were in front of Proctor's and they had hot cocoa for sale inside to help warm us, and a T.A.R.D.I.S.

We'll bring travel mugs next year.

We were in the perfect location to watch the tree lighting
 before the parade began.

There was a technical glitch with a group of performers early on but they carried on like real troopers despite the lack of audio. We were very impressed with the young people but embarrassed for the crew. It will be better next time.

One of my daughters wasn't dressed warmly because it wasn't THAT cold
when she went to work in the morning, so I gave up my gloves
despite taking dozens of photos.

The parade lasted over two hours and there was so much to see
with all of the floats and participants.

We ended up leaving early but finished watching the live stream from the comfort of our living room. Next year we plan on arriving a little late so we can see Santa.

Happy Holidays!!!

Sinterklaas arrives tonight - will your children be in Spain tomorrow?

It's December 5th.  That day known to all Dutch children as the day when Sinterklaas arrives to either give the children presents - or punish them.

Unlike our rotund Santa Clause, Sinterklaas is a slender man in the garb of the Catholic church's royalty.

After all he is a retired Bishop of Turkey.

He arrives by boat to The Netherlands in mid-November and then climbs onto a horse to travel around the country, listening to the wishes of all of the hopeful boys and girls. He is accompanied by six to eight black men.  Apparently a number that is too high for anyone to get an accurate count on. Zwarte Piet, as these black men are known formerly were slaves but now are friends of Sinterklaas.

In previous days, Sinterklaas and his Zwarte Piet would go house-to-house on the night December 5th giving presents to the good children and beating the bad children with a switch.  Sometimes they would even put the really bad children into sacks and take them back to Spain - where Sinterklaas now lives.

Today, they merely pretend to kick the naughty boys and girls.

It makes me grateful to be an American where we only get lumps of coal.

After all, coal is worth a lot now-a-days.

Seriously - have you purchased any recently?

Happy St. Nicholas Day, Netherlands!!

Something To Be Thankful For

I got such wonderful news today. With everything that has been going wrong with my life, it's a welcome break.

My oldest daughter.  My fellow redhead.  My Mini-Me (her 5 feet-even to my towering 5 feet 2 inches).  Winnie. Bugs.  My beautiful India Sierra will be coming home for Christmas Break.

We didn't think it would happen. Money is too tight and my cars are just not reliable enough to drive the six hours to her college home in the Albany area. Her boyfriend's mom drove across the state to pick her up and when her cell phone minutes ran out we began relying on her using the library computer to chat almost daily.

I barely remember the sound of her voice but I will never forget the feel of her hug.  She loves to hug.  She loves to talk too - non-stop (she is a mini me after all)-  but hugging is her favourite thing to do. She would talk to Matthew for hours.  She calls him her best friend.  It isn't often that siblings love each other as much as they do.  They share a special bond, a special closeness.

We had chatted about her, maybe, coming home for mid-winter break.  She should have a job by then so it would depend on her schedule.  I haven't seen her since she left in August.  Even with five of my children still at home, it feels like part of me is missing.   I miss her so much.

On Sunday our church's office manager was asking about her when I said India can't come home for the Holidays, there is no money.   This lovely lady said she would pray about it.  Yesterday she tried to call me but I was resting.  Today I called her back at the church office and she told me they are paying for India's bus fare.

I don't know how to thank them enough.  I have something special to be thankful for - my little girl is coming home.

I Love You, India.

I found this video and it just seemed to fit my mood so well right now.

Attack of the killer dust bunnies

Did you ever have one of those days when you just waste the entire day?  I don't mean over in Facebook or playing computer games.  I mean just doing nothing really.  Today is one of those days.  I popped into this email or that FB account and even watched some Netflix but I just haven't done a darn thing.

I really should get something done, I mean it is Monday after all and Monday is my cleaning day.  With three boys under 17, I really need to clean after the weekend.

But does it really matter if I'm a day late? What will happen?  Will the dust bunnies attack?  I have real bunnies who could take them with one ear tied behind their heads - so bring it on!!

With a name like Taffy and a brother named Oreo,
how could you not kick dust bunny butt?

What I really should be doing is packing up the three Christmas trees still set up in various rooms of my house.  I did manage to put away everything else... but those trees.  So time consuming.  I wonder if I can just put a bag over them and pack them up, ornaments and all.  That would make things so much easier.

But they look  so pretty and the one in the living room isn't taking any space.  I usually have a bookcase in that corner, but the bookcase seems fine in the rec room.  I could make it seasonal.  You know, change the ornaments each month.

Admit it, for a second you thought that would be cool too.

See - those dust bunnies come in all sizes.
Now that I think about it, that would require getting up off this couch and I really don't want to do that.  I have another ninety-five minutes before the bus pulls up and drops off the thundering herd, which gives me just enough time to watch more Netflix and maybe take a nap.

I'm experimenting with a new recipe tonight that I made up, so I don't want to strain myself anyway.

So, off to my queue....

The Night After Christmas

Not too many people remember that Clement Moore wrote "Night Before Christmas" while visiting the Constable family of Constableville in Very Northern New York State.  It is said that the beauty of that evening in this small hamlet nestled between the Adirondack Park and Lake Ontario inspired him to write this timeless poem.  I spent most of my life living near Constable Hall and so this poem has special meaning to me.  When visiting the hall I can look across the rolling lawn and surrounding farmland and imagine what it looked like that evening.  For this reason, and because it is just a wonderful little story, it's a tradition to read "Night Before Christmas" to my children.

I'm not posting Clement Moore's poem.

I thought you might enjoy this parody:

The Night After Christmas

‘Twas the night after Christmas, when all through the house
Every soul was abed, and as still as a mouse;
The stockings, so lately St. Nicholas’ care,
Were emptied of all that was eatable there.
The darlings had duly been tucked in their beds –
With very full stomachs, and pains in their heads.
I was dozing away in my new cotton cap,
And Nancy was rather far gone in a nap,
When out in the nurs’ry arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my sleep, crying — “What is the matter?”
I flew to each bedside — still half in a doze –
Tore open the curtains, and threw off the clothes;
While the light of the taper served clearly to show
The piteous plight of those objects below;
For what to the fond father’s eyes should appear
But the little pale face of each sick little dear?
For each pet that had crammed itself full as a tick,
I knew in a moment now felt like Old Nick.
Their pulses were rapid, their breathing the same,
What their stomachs rejected I’ll mention by name –
Now Turkey, now Stuffing, Plum Pudding, of course,
And Custards, and Crullers, and Cranberry sauce;
Before outraged nature, all went to the wall,
Yes — Lollypops, Flapdoddle, Dinner and all;
Like pellets which urchins from popguns let fly,
Went figs, nuts and raisins, jam, jelly and pie,
Till each error of diet was brought to my view,
To the shame of Mamma and Santa Claus, too.
I turned from the sight, to my bedroom stepped back,
And brought out a phial marked “Pulv. Ipecac.,”
When my Nancy exclaimed — for their sufferings shocked her –
“Don’t you think you had better, love, run for the Doctor?”
I ran — and was scarcely back under my roof,
When I heard the sharp clatter of old Jalap’s hoof.
I might say that I hardly had turned myself round,
When the Doctor came into the room with a bound.
He was covered with mud from his head to his foot,
And the suit he had on was his very worst suit;
He had hardly had time to put that on his back,
And he looked like a Falstaff half fuddled with sack.
His eyes, how they twinkled! Had the Doctor got merry?
His cheeks looked like Port and his breath smelt ofSherry,
He hadn’t been shaved for a fortnight or so,
And the beard on his chin wasn’t white as the snow.
But inspecting their tongues in despite of their teeth,
And drawing his watch from the waistcoat beneath,
He felt of each pulse, saying — “Each little belly
Must get rid” — here he laughed — of the rest of that jelly.”
I gazed on each chubby, plump, sick little elf,
And groaned when he said so, in spite of myself;
But a wink of his eye when he physicked our Fred
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
He didn’t prescribe, but went straightway to work
And dosed all the rest, gave his trousers a jerk,
And, adding directions while blowing his nose,
He buttoned his coat; from his chair he arose,
Then jumped in his gig, gave old Jalap a whistle,
And Jalap dashed off as if pricked by a thistle;
But the Doctor exclaimed, ere he drove out of sight,
“They’ll be well by to-morrow — good-night, Jones, good-night!”
